Driving in the intense summer heat of the UAE puts extreme stress on your vehicle's cooling system. The combination of 45-degree ambient temperatures and heavy traffic can push even well-maintained engines past their boiling point.
If you notice the temperature gauge spiking into the red zone while driving on Sheikh Zayed Road, or if you see steam billowing from under the hood while stuck in Sharjah traffic, taking immediate and correct action can save your engine from catastrophic failure.
1. Pull Over Safely and Immediately
Do not try to "make it home" or push the car to the next service station. As soon as it is safe to do so, pull over to the hard shoulder, a parking lot, or a safe side street. Turn on your hazard lights immediately to warn other drivers that you are experiencing an emergency.
2. Turn Off the Engine and the A/C
Turn off the engine immediately to stop it from producing more heat. If you absolutely cannot pull over right away because you are in a dangerous spot, turn off the air conditioning to reduce the load on the engine. Counterintuitively, you should turn on the heater to max. This draws heat away from the engine compartment, acting like a secondary radiator, though it will be uncomfortable in the cabin.
3. DO NOT Open the Radiator Cap
This is the most common and dangerous mistake drivers make. Never attempt to open the radiator cap or the coolant reservoir while the engine is hot. The coolant inside is highly pressurized and boiling at over 120 degrees Celsius. Opening the cap will cause a geyser of scalding liquid and steam to erupt, which can result in severe third-degree burns to your face and hands.
4. Wait for it to Cool Down
Patience is critical. Wait at least 30 to 45 minutes for the engine to cool down before even popping the hood to look underneath. Once the engine is cool to the touch, you can visually inspect the coolant reservoir level. However, if there is a major leak (such as a blown radiator hose), simply adding water will not solve the problem.
5. Look for Visible Leaks
While waiting, look under the car. If you see a puddle of brightly colored fluid (usually green, pink, or orange), your car has suffered a catastrophic coolant leak. Do not attempt to drive the vehicle any further, as running an engine without coolant will melt the internal components within minutes.
6. Call Professional Car Recovery
Driving an overheated car can warp the cylinder head or destroy the engine block, resulting in massive repair bills. The safest and most economical choice is to request a flatbed towing service to transport your car to a trusted garage. Professional recovery services have the equipment to safely load a disabled vehicle without causing further damage.
